Securing these benefits is a rigorous process. The government requires absolute compliance with their criteria, meaning benefits are never guaranteed without meticulous preparation. Success requires time, extensive documentation, close cooperation with your medical professionals, patience, and a strategic approach. [1]

If you qualify to apply you need to understand CPP and no other Service Provider are going to give you benefits unless you meet all their qualifications for benefits. In essence such benefits just do not drop from the sky. They have conditions and these conditions must be met – all the information they want must be given. What I am saying is it is not easy to meet all the conditions – it takes time – lots of work – co-operation from all the medical professionals involved in your case – patience – and sometimes even a little bit of luck. The first condition is the person must be totally disabled from the workforce – meaning all work – due to physical and / or mental health issues including depression, anxiety, PTSD, panic attacks, sleep disorders etc. The person must be accurate in the information they provide. They cannot say
they can walk for long periods of time or long distances if they can only walk short distances and for short periods of time. Remember if you say you can walk for
twenty minutes it means you can walk a mile – because most people can walk a mile in 20 minutes. If necessary, time yourself regarding sitting, walking, bending, crawling, etc. Just measure exactly what you can do before you need to sit and rest. Describe your health issues – make sure they understand your exact problems
and how they keep you from working at any kind of a job. The family doctor must complete the medical forms that are in with the package of forms that one can get at the local Service Canada office – or by mail from Service Canada – or on the computer. It is good if he/she includes chart notes, referrals to other specialists in the past
and if they are expected to be seen in the immediate future, various tests had and waiting to be had, as well as their own objective opinion of your overall health
situation. The applicant’s application is 19 pages long. This must be completed precisely – meaning if they are not done right most, likely the application will be rejected. The person must focus on what CPP asks for, not what they think will help them get the application approved. If an application is done correctly and all information supplied, approval should be the result. My experience tells me over 50% of applications are rejected the first time. If the person gets more information, then it goes for ‘reconsideration’ – if it fails at that stage it must go to a formal Hearing. Our preference is to do the job from the start – or at least grab it at the
reconsideration stage. Our aim is to avoid appeals but, if an appeal is necessary, we will work with a local lawyer, who will do the actual presentation at the appeal
hearing. Documents that should be gathered: Hospital print out of services obtained from the present to as far back as possible. Pharmacy print out of all medication prescribed for the present to at least three years back. Print out of all doctors seen from the present to as far back as possible. In NS this can be obtained from MSI of NS – sample attached. Each province has its own medical services office that provides such printouts at no charge to the applicant. Information re any benefits being received such as Disability Tax Credit, Handicapped Parking Pass, Workers Compensation, Income from any Private Service Plans such as Manulife, Sun Life, Great West Life etc. Income directly from the employer such as payment for sick time and income from Unions they belong to etc. Attach any medical information you may have – any reports from and medical professional as well as from service providers. Note any significant experiences such as accidents that have led to medical
treatment; past surgeries or medical problems that have affected your ability to live normally; work place injuries, etc. The case workers at CPP need to be able to get to know you as the person you are from the information submitted.
